SHOSTAKOVICH'S
PIANO CONCERTO NO. 2, ALLEGRO, OPUS 102
(THE STEADFAST TIN SOLDIER)
Inspired
by sketches created in the 1940s by a Disney story artist working
on an adaptation of a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, director
Hendel Butoy discovered he had the perfect plot to go with this
lively classical composition. Computer-generated imagery blends
seamlessly with traditional hand-drawn animation in this delightfully
entertaining tale, one of seven new segments created for Walt
Disney Pictures' animated extravaganza "Fantasia/2000."
The story follows the adventures of a brave tin soldier who overcomes
incredible odds to rescue a beautiful ballerina from a sinister
jack-in-the-box and win her heart.

THE
STEADFAST TIN SOLDIER
(SHOSTAKOVICH'S PIANO CONCERTO NO. 2, ALLEGRO, OPUS 102)
Director Hendel Butoy matched Hans Christian Andersen's magical
fairy tale about a beautiful ballerina and a brave toy soldier
to the music of Dmitri Shostakovich's "Piano Concerto No.
2, Allegro, Opus 102" for his version of "The Steadfast
Tin Soldier," one of seven new segments created for Walt
Disney Pictures' animated extravaganza "Fantasia/2000."
"Fantasia/2000" was executive-produced by Roy Edward
Disney and produced by Don Ernst. Butoy also served as the film's
supervising animation director. James Levine conducted the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra.

CARNIVAL
OF THE ANIMALS (LE CARNAVAL DES ANIMAUX) FINALE
Providing an answer to the age-old question, "What would
happen if you gave a yo-yo to a bunch of flamingos?," director
Eric Goldberg serves up a wacky and witty interlude that adds
color and comedy to the proceedings in Walt Disney Pictures' animated
extravaganza "Fantasia/2000." Set to music by Camille
Saint-Saëns and coupled with vibrant watercolor stylings, this
piece celebrates the wonder and excitement of daring to stand
apart from the flock. The original idea for this segment came
from veteran Disney storyman Joe Grant, who served as head of
story on "Fantasia" and is still a vital member of the
Studio's feature animation team at age 91.

MICKEY
AND THE MAESTRO
Acclaimed conductor James Levine gets a helping hand from the
Sorcerer's Apprentice as he prepares to take up his baton. Levine's
28-year association with the Metropolitan Opera has earned him
a special place in the musical world. Among the many highlights
of Levine's career was a 20-year stint as music director of
the Ravinia Festival, where he led the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
The Orchestra recorded the new musical selections for Walt Disney
Pictures' animated extravaganza "Fantasia/2000."
