The Timewarp Using Timewarp in After Effects 7.0 Pro By Stephen Schleicher

The Timewarp effect is one of the new additions to Adobe After Effects 7.0.  With this effect you can speed up or slow down footage for dramatic results.  In this exercise, I?ll show you how to use Timewarp to create a slo-mo effect.

Step 1:  Launch After Effects 7.0 Professional and create a New Project (Command+N on the Mac, Control+N on the PC).  Name the composition Timewarp and use the Composition Preset for your footage.

For this example, I will be using a clip from Artbeats ? Recreational Sports 1 (V-Line) series.

Since adjusting the speed of a clip will affect the duration of the clip, I?m going to be generous and set the Comp Length to at least twice the length of the clip.  We can also go and set Beginning and Ending Work Area length before the Render.

Step 2:  Drag the clip from the Project panel to the Timeline.

Step 3:  With the layer selected, apply the Timewarp effect (Effect>Time>Timewarp).  In the Effect Controls Panel, make sure Method is set to Frame Mix.  Pixel Motion tells Timewarp to analyze each frame of the clip to create motion vectors, which is probably better for slight adjustments in speed, and for motion backgrounds.  The Frame Mix option creates a new frame by interpolating existing frames.

Make sure Adjust Time By is set to Speed.  This is the default setting that allows you to adjust the motion by percentages rather than hitting a particular frame.

By default, Timewarp changes the Speed of the clip to 50% (half speed).  In this in example, we will start the clip at 100% until the biker reaches the top of the dirt ramp, then slow the footage to 30% at the top of his arc, then resume normal speed when he hits the ground.

Step 4:  Change the Speed to 100%.

Step 5:  Move the Timeline Indicator to the point where you want the speed change to begin.  In this example, the biker reaches to top of the ramp at 2:05.
