Cut + Run Sees Upside With California Lotto Dan Swietlik edits new campaign for California Lottery via BBDO/West (August 31, 2004)

Cut + Run?s Dan Swietlik recently edited a new campaign for California Lottery via BBDO/West. The campaign is about life?s activities contrasted for their upsides and downsides. The campaign consists of five spots, each centered on people suffering the consequences of taking chances with huge downsides. One depicts a man attempting to use the ?This is not a step? on a ladder to gain some more height to screw in a light bulb. The voiceover reads ?Upside? Eight more inches.? Downside? Full body cast.? Another depicts a couple running out of gas when the husband refuses his wife?s pleas to refuel on a deserted highway as coyotes howl in the distance. The voiceover reads ?Upside? Being right. Downside? Being eaten.? In all the spots the voiceover continues, ?Why not take a chance where the upside is millions of dollars and the downside is only a buck? The tag reads: ?SuperLOTTO Plus. Big upside.?

?The agency creatives -- Jim Lesser, Neil Levy, and Jason Roberts -- were excited about keeping these spots real and human since they?re about those forks-in-the-road that we all encounter every day,? notes Editor Dan Swietlik. ?The goal, and also the challenge, was to keep things subtle and not let them slip over the top. It?s easy to lose track of that after staring at the cuts, but the team stayed fresh and focused throughout the entire process.?

Content Insider #148 - The iGen
NO...Doesn't have a thing to do with "that" smartphone...or "that" store...or "that" tablet. It's the next generation. Kids and we mean little kids. That's what today's products are being designed for/targeted at. You happen to buy one...fine. Watch a little, little kid pick up a smartphone. He/she just uses it. They've come pre-wired and we're still trying to figure out how to IM. It's the IGen. They want it instantly. They want to use it instantly. They expect their photos, their video, their music, their stuff immediately when/where/how they want it. Read More

Insider #149 - Game Demographics
The blood, gore, adrenalin challenges that were unveiled at E3 and enjoyed at ComicCon are fun to look at, easy to hold but are they really the games people want to plunk down their credit cards to own or rent time with? Seems as though the investors, the players who control the controllers have a different idea of a "good" game than the kids who develop them. While mobs of people play educational, informational, stimulating games our kid huddles in his room and mumbles "The Few, The Proud, The Gamers." Read More
