New Screening Room Encourages
Public Critique of Animator and Student Images

(Santa Barbara) Animation Artist Online Magazine — www.animationartist.com — has unveiled an innovative online method for animators and students to have their drawings and 3D images critiqued by peers. Called the Screening Room — www.animationartist.com/screeningroom/ — artists can have their work posted in a special online room where the public can analyze and critique the image. After a period of three weeks, the image is removed and the artist is encouraged to implement the suggested changes. Once the changes are implemented, both the “before” and “after” picture are put on display in the Final Cut room.

“The Screening Room is a great place for animators and students to increase their skills through valuable feedback from their peers,” says Vicki Tracy, editor of Animation Artist Magazine. “We have created the first online environment for images to go through a thorough review process.”

Rooms are split into three categories: Professional Animators, Aspiring/Student Animators, and Young Animators (ages 7-14). The artist’s name, image title, description, and questions the artist wants answered are displayed with the image. The public then views the image and fills out an easy online form to submit a critique.

Animators who use 3D programs - like Maya, SoftImage, LightWave, and 3D Studio MAX - are encouraged not to state which program was used to help create the image. Tracy says this is because she doesn’t want those reviewing the images to form a bias from knowing which software assisted in the creation of the image. She wants the focus to be purely on improving the image, regardless of the software used.

George Alexa, the father of 12-year old Christian James Alexa (currently featured in the Young Artists Screening Room) was thrilled to find this resource for his son’s work to be critiqued. Christian already speaks French and Latin and plays the Cello in the String Ensemble for the Northern Virginia Youth Symphony. Since Christian has never taken drawing lessons, the Animation Artist online Screening Room is turning out to be a great avenue for him to get advice from professionals on his drawings. So far he’s been getting a lot of thumbs up and good advice for his original image, titled “Boy in Go-Kart.”

“Christian has already started to ‘upgrade’ his picture, using some of the suggestions given by Screening Room visitors,” says George Alexa. Once Christian’s final image is received back, it will be posted to the Final Cut room for all to admire.

The Screening Room is a free service to all professional, aspiring, student, and young animators/artists.
