Alias/Wavefront Announces "Maya Infinity"

(February 18, 1999) Alias|Wavefront, a subsidiary of Silicon Graphics, Inc., today announced Maya Infinity™, a new graphics production suite which offers Alias|Wavefront's most advanced 3D technology for the high-end film and video industry using Silicon Graphics IRIX® workstations.

Maya Infinity is an integrated software package for film and video production houses that extends the leading edge of graphics technology. Maya Infinity incorporates all the functionality of Alias|Wavefront's recently announced Maya Complete™ software for 3D character animation and visual effects, coupled with Alias|Wavefront's most radical new animation & digital effects technology.

"Maya Infinity is an arsenal of advanced tools that simply has no equal," says Bob Bennett, Maya product line manager at Alias|Wavefront. "Maya Infinity extends the realm of possibility for digital artists who want to shape the frontier of advanced 3D technology."

Positioned as a highly specialized version of Alias|Wavefront's recently announced Maya Complete software, Maya Infinity includes all of Maya Complete for modeling, rendering and animation, plus a suite of integrated custom applications including Maya Live™ for highly automated live-action match-moving, Maya Cloth™ for fast and accurate clothing and fabric simulation, Maya Fur™ for interactive design and styling of fur and hair, and Maya PowerModeler™ for intricate and seamless NURBS modeling for Entertainment applications.

Maya Infinity addresses the unique needs of high-end production houses, by providing integrated tools that help solve the most difficult problems in computer graphics, while providing an open solution that can adapt to any production workflow.

High-end film and video customers need Maya Infinity application's integrated approach to solving highly complex problems. For example, users can easily create a realistic digital lion with a flowing mane by painting on the fur with the Maya Artisan™ paintbrush tool. Then users can style the appearance by "combing" the fur with the brush. When animated, the fur will move naturally as the lion walks or shakes its mane, due to complete integration with the Maya Infinity software's next-generation architecture is designed with customization in mind, which is a necessary requirement in today's advanced film and video production pipelines.

"Maya Infinity customers want to take control of the system and to customize it for their own special needs," says Brent Blackett, entertainment marketing director at Alias|Wavefront. "Maya Infinity is the ideal way for users to bring their artistic vision to life."

Maya Infinity includes:
· Maya Complete-Includes Maya F/X™, which features an integrated particle system plus integrated rigid and soft-body dynamics; Maya Artisan, a unique, integrated brush interface for digital sculpting and modeling; industry - leading NURBS and polygon modeling tools; a film-quality rendering system with advanced visual effects; and animation features that include inverse kinematics (IK), powerful character skinning, and advanced deformation tools; and MEL, an open interface for programming and scripting Maya.

· Maya Live-Combines 2D live action and 3D CGI by extracting live action footage and creating an exact duplicate of the original camera. The duplicate camera is used to render images in Maya Infinity and precisely match the original live action footage in the composite.

· Maya Cloth-Offers the fastest and most accurate cloth solution in the industry, capable of simulating an array of fabrics, including denim, cotton, silk, leather, and linen. Maya Cloth is well optimized to address the complexities of creating digital clothing as well as fabric objects such as tents, sails, bedding, and drapery.

· Maya Fur-Allows the artist to accurately paint realistic fur and short hair on multiple NURBS surfaces. Users can paint fur attributes directly onto the surface and even brush and comb the hair using Maya Artisan. The fur color can be mapped within Maya or painted in Alias StudioPaint™, and is completely integrated with Maya Infinity software's dynamics, animation, and rendering.

· Maya PowerModeler-Contains additional NURBS modeling features for the creation of complex models.

· Two Supplemental Batch Rendering Licenses-Increases rendering productivity and maximizes throughput. Maya Infinity runs on Silicon Graphics IRIX workstations.
