(October 26) Alias|Wavefront, a subsidiary of Silicon Graphics, Inc., recently announced that the latest version of Maya Live(TM) software will contain a new solver and object tracking from a fixed camera. The new solver in Maya Live is based on world renowned technology pioneered by Alchemy 3D(R) Technology. Alias|Wavefront has signed an exclusive licensing agreement with Alchemy 3D Technology to integrate its patented match-mover solver into Maya Live software. Addition of this technology will reduce the time and cost of accurately recovering complex 3D camera moves and scene geometry from film and video. This new version of Maya Live will be available on SGI and Windows NT(R) platforms. Maya Live is an advanced module for Alias|Wavefront's industry-leading 3D animation software product, Maya. Maya is an innovative new approach to character animation and visual effects. Maya Live expands the core Maya functionality to include 2D/3D integration by enabling artists to add realistic 3D objects into live-action scenes with complete accuracy. Maya Live can quickly and accurately track reference points in a film or video sequence and extract or reproduce the original 3D camera used to take the shot. With the addition of Alchemy 3D's match-mover solver scenes that would have taken days to do by hand can now be done with Maya Live in a matter of hours. Using Maya Live, 3D animators, matchmovers and designers can also create scenes of a complexity never previously imaginable. The match-moving technology to be used in Maya Live was invented by Dr. Ali Azarbayejani while working toward his Ph.D. at MIT Media Lab. Dr. Azarbayejani has a Ph.D. in computer vision and computational geometry from MIT and is widely recognized as a leading authority in the use of machine vision techniques to recover 3D information from film sequences. Dr. Azarbayejani founded Alchemy 3D to build software based on this technology for the film and video post-production industry. "We are very excited to bring this state-of-the-art technology to our customers," explained Chris Ford, Maya Live product manager at Alias|Wavefront. "With Maya Live customers will now be able to have access to unprecedented speed, accuracy, reliability in match-moving." With Maya Live artists
can recover camera position, focal length, camera motion, perspective
and 3D scene geometry directly from a live-action sequence. Maya
Live also offers object tracking of moving objects. Since Maya
Live is fully integrated with Maya(TM), artists can introduce 3D elements
quickly and easily within one integrated package. "I can't think of any new software product that is more important to the work I do," explained Maya Live user Harry Paakonen, co-owner and CGI director at Mixin Pixls. "I can now work on shots I would never have previously attempted and feel confident about the results." Price & Availability
