These powerful plug-ins will be part of LightWave 3D 6.0, due to be released later this year

San Antonio, July 7, 1999-- In anticipation of its upcoming release of the greatly anticipated LightWave 3D [6], NewTek today announced that it will offer the powerful WaveFilter plug-ins, which will be integrated into LightWave 3D 6.0, free of charge to all registered owners of LightWave 3D 5.6. NewTek, manufacturer of industry-leading 3D animation and video production products, will make the plug-ins available for download at its Web site (www.newtek.com).

"This offer demonstrates how highly NewTek values our customers, providing our existing users with the opportunity to begin working with the WaveFilter plug-ins now, even before we begin shipping LightWave [6]," said Brad Peebler, vice president of marketing of NewTek. "The WaveFilter plug-ins, for which NewTek recently purchased the rights, add impressive new dimensions to LightWave 3D. In fact, we believe that LightWave 3D users will be blown away with the various effects they can create with these plug-ins."

The WaveFilter suite is comprised of four plug-ins: WaveFilter Tools, WaveFilter Volume, WaveFilter Image and WaveFilter Shader. Each works on both Intel and Alpha computing platforms.

WaveFilter Volume is a powerful shader with seven methods to create volume effects. Each mode creates volume objects using different techniques to help users get the desired effect as quickly as possible. Users can fill any mesh object with volume, or they can put a transparent box around a scene and a special WaveFilter Volume lens on the camera to create scene-wide volume effects. In this way, users can choose if the effect is enclosed in a mesh or applied to the entire scene.

The plug-in operates in a number of modes:

  • The Linear mode provides super-fast and flexible volume fog effects.
  • The Falloff mode enables users to control the falloff of the fog with an animatable Bezier curve and to blend the color of the fog with another animatable Bezier.
  • The Hypertexture mode lets users create true ray-marched 3D volume, with many noise types available.
  • Hypertexture Plus adds the ability for the ray-marched volume to be light-sensitive. There is no need to set each light separately, because all light types are supported, including point and area lights: Adding a light to the scene triggers the volume to respond automatically with volumetric effects.
  • The Hypertexture Cloud Ball mode makes fireballs, explosions and clouds.
  • Hypertexture Particles allows particles to toss many Cloud Ball-style effects. Hypertexture Particles with lights adds the ability to get volumetric lighting effects within the particles.

WaveFilter Image provides professional-level post-image adjustment capabilities. This plug-in is the fourth generation of one of the best-selling LightWave 3D plug-ins of all time WaveFilter Image includes the softest, most beautiful blur effects available in the industry today. It also includes an edge-blend tool to speed rendering by allowing higher threshold setting for LightWave 3D's own anti-alias; film grain; a full set of color correction; and composite and image-enhancement tools. The color preview window assures that users get the exact settings they need - quickly, easily and accurately.

WaveFilter Shader is a surfacing tool with professional-level control. Bezier curves provide tremendous flexibility over the most important surfacing parameters. Every feature is animatable, including the Beziers. Users gain unprecedented control over fractal noise, glancing effects and the full range of surfacing parameters, as well as 30-frame-per-second real-time texture preview.

This version of Shader supports a new Plugin2 SDK that allows programmers to add new textures to Shader with minimum code, so they can produce very powerful LightWave 3D shaders faster and with less effort that with the LightWave SDK. For non-coders (Intel version only), the Plugin2 Creator was designed for those who find writing code a nightmare. It can also make the job of an avid coder much simpler. All users can create very powerful, real C-based Shader Plugin2 files with only a few mouse clicks, and without even needing a compiler. Instead, the Plugin2 Creator creates the true C source files itself, then uses the Internet to send the source to the WaveFilter site, where the files are automatically compiled. The resulting Plugin2 file is then returned to the user for installation, again automatically.

WaveFilter Tools, a collection of tools aimed at the serious desktop professional, are expected to prove indispensable to 3D designers, animators and video editors everywhere. The collection includes the following tools:

  • WaveFilter Beat Recorder - tap out a beat and get frame numbers for animation or timecode for editing
  • WaveFilter Sequence - rename and renumber frame sequences
  • WaveFilter Super Points Into Things (SPIT) - turn points in the modeler into nulls or any other object
  • WaveFilter RenderDroid - put RenderDroid on the Windows desktop for drag-and-drop rendering
  • WaveFilter Evolver - selectively clone attributes and plug-in settings from one surface to many surfaces

Price and Availability
The WaveFilter plug-ins are available now at the NewTek Web site (www.newtek.com), free of charge, to all registered users of LightWave 3D 5.6. The same plug-ins will be integrated into LightWave [6], which is expected to begin shipping later this year.
